Slashdot redesign winner announced

The winning entry can be seen here. This is far better than the original slashdot but far from revolutionary. There were other far more interesting layouts, but I guess this was the one that kept CmdrTaco happy and was backward compatible as well. Sigh.

Theo, to be fair, per Slashdot's contest rules, backwards compatibility was not optional, it was an absolute requirement. The designs that "went wild", so to say, were never even considered by Rob.

Basically, HTML and structural changes weren't allowed (though a couple small tweaks simply couldn't be avoided), leaving the redesign to be accomplished with CSS. From having observed the design process for the winning entry up close, working within those constraints was no easy thing.

So, while I won't question the need for Slashdot to reinvent itself, this was not an opportunity for that. The revolution is scheduled for a later date.
